Straying Away from Wattpad and Kindle Vella: A New Chapter in My Writing Journey

Updated: Nov 28

As a writer, the platforms we choose to share our work can significantly impact our creative process, audience reach, and overall growth. For the past few years, Wattpad and Kindle Vella have been my go-to platforms. They offered me a space to publish my stories, connect with readers, and get instant feedback. However, as I continue to evolve as a writer, I’ve found myself straying away from these sites, seeking new avenues that align more closely with my creative vision and long-term goals.

The Shift in My Creative Focus

When I first started on Wattpad and Kindle Vella, the serialized format was exciting. It was thrilling to release chapters and immediately engage with readers, seeing their reactions in real time. However, as I delved deeper into my craft, I realized that the episodic nature of these platforms was subtly influencing the way I wrote. Instead of focusing on the bigger picture and the intricate details of storytelling, I found myself catering to the need for constant cliffhangers and rapid plot progression to keep readers hooked.

This shift in focus made me realize that my true passion lies in crafting complete, well-rounded narratives that can be savored in their entirety rather than piecemeal. I want to take my time with each story, allowing the characters and plot to develop naturally without the pressure to release the next chapter quickly.

The Desire for Creative Control

Another reason I’ve been stepping away from Wattpad and Kindle Vella is the desire for greater creative control. While these platforms offer a fantastic community and tools for writers, they also come with certain constraints. For instance, the formatting options can be limiting, and the need to adhere to a specific genre or style to gain visibility can stifle creativity.

As I’ve grown as a writer, I’ve found myself wanting to experiment more with my storytelling—whether that means exploring different genres, playing with unconventional narrative structures, or even incorporating multimedia elements. Unfortunately, the established norms of Wattpad and Kindle Vella make it challenging to fully embrace these creative impulses.

Connecting with My Ideal Audience

One of the most rewarding aspects of platforms like Wattpad and Kindle Vella is the immediate connection with readers. However, as my writing style has evolved, I’ve noticed a disconnect between the type of stories I want to tell and the expectations of the audience on these platforms. My current work, which leans more towards dark, intricate thrillers and whimsical yet eerie children’s stories, doesn’t always resonate with the mainstream readership on these sites.

To truly connect with an audience that appreciates the nuances of my writing, I’ve started exploring alternative platforms and publishing methods. Whether it’s self-publishing a complete novel or focusing on niche communities that align with my themes, I’m excited to find new ways to reach readers who will connect deeply with my work.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

Moving away from Wattpad and Kindle Vella is a significant shift in my writing journey, but it feels like the right step forward. As I embark on this new chapter, I’m excited to focus on creating stories that resonate with my true artistic vision, connect with a more targeted audience, and explore new creative possibilities without the constraints of serialized platforms.

This isn’t a farewell to Wattpad and Kindle Vella entirely—I still value the community and the opportunities they’ve provided me. But for now, my journey is leading me towards new horizons, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a writer considering a similar shift, remember that your creative journey is yours to shape. It’s okay to outgrow certain platforms or methods if they no longer serve your vision. Embrace the change, explore new possibilities, and continue to write stories that stay true to who you are.
